Matisse Blue Magnolias
Details
'Matisse Blue Magnolias' features a graceful composition of magnolia blossoms on a deep blue background. The color was inspired by Matisse's use of ultramarine blue, specifically the shade used in his blue nudes paper cutouts. In the same way that Matisse used blue to represent distance in his work, this piece uses the ultramarine blue to create depth. This piece was painted en plein air at Hampton Park in Charleston, South Carolina.
